Last weekend belonged to 1776. This week belongs to the people who run the city on a Tuesday. The Council gavels tonight at 6:15 in City Hall, DPW paving crews start two street programs, and Wildcliff Mansion relights Thursday for the first of four haunt nights.
Today crews work Mill Road between the Eastchester border and North Avenue, plus North Avenue from Mill Road to Quaker Ridge Road, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Wednesday they move to seven streets west of North Avenue, from St. Pauls Place up to Highridge Road. The Haunt runs Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Halloween night at Wildcliff, and Little Haunters, the no-jump-scare version, lands Halloween from 4:00 to 7:30 PM. FALL-O-WEEN takes Five Islands Park Friday evening for the Pre-K through 5th grade crowd. The weather cooperates: sunny and 68 today, dry through Friday, though it cools to 57 by then.
If you drive any of those streets, plan around the work or walk over and watch. Fresh asphalt goes down fast once the milling starts, and the city marks every entry weather permitting, so a surprise wet morning slides the whole list a day. The full week sits in the calendar below, every entry linked to the city's own page.

When does the New Rochelle City Council meet next, and can I watch?
Tonight. Tuesday, October 20, 6:15 to 7:15 PM, City Hall, 515 North Avenue. It is the Regular Legislative Meeting, the Council's standard working session, and the calendar entry carries an agenda link plus a Watch link with the video, so you can follow from the couch if the room fills up. Right? Two more dates round out the week: the Planning Board meets Monday, October 26 at 7:00 PM, and the State of the City lands Tuesday, October 27, 6:00 to 8:30 PM at the JCC Mid-Westchester, 999 Wilmot Road, with an RSVP at newrochelleny.gov/SOTCRSVP.
Why are crews paving North Avenue and Mill Road today?
Two DPW programs run back to back. Today it is Mill Road between the Eastchester border and North Avenue, and North Avenue between Mill Road and Quaker Ridge Road, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Wednesday the crews shift to St. Pauls Place, Hilltop Avenue, Chauncey Avenue, Carol Lane, Highland Avenue, May Street and Highridge Road, same hours. Milling means grinding off the worn surface layer before the new asphalt goes down, and the city schedules this work weather permitting, so rain moves everything a day. The good news is the forecast: dry and sunny through Friday.
Three versions run at Wildcliff Mansion, 44 Wildcliff Road, and the age line decides it. The Haunt is the full-strength one: 25 dollars, timed entry, with 40 dollar fast passes and 75 dollar VIP passes, running Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Halloween, 7:00 to 10:30 PM. HAUNTFEST on Saturday, October 24, 7:00 to 10:30 PM, is the party version, music, a food truck and vendors, presented by the Hudson Park Children's Greenhouse, the group behind the haunt. Little Haunters is the scaled-down one for younger kids: no jump scares, trick-or-treating at the end, Halloween from 4:00 to 7:30 PM. Tickets for the haunt nights live at hauntatwildcliff.com.
The Regular Legislative Meeting runs tonight, October 20, 6:15 to 7:15 PM at City Hall, 515 North Avenue. The agenda posts on the calendar entry before the gavel, and the Watch link carries the video if you would rather not drive down.
Street work is the city government you can see from your car, and this week it is loud. Today's program covers Mill Road and the North Avenue segment by the Mill Road corner. Wednesday's covers seven streets west of North Avenue. Both run 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, weather permitting. Below ground, the flood work continues: the Tulip Lane closure between Pinebrook Boulevard and Winding Brook Road runs about six weeks from October 14 for the Sheldrake Culvert Replacement Project, which upsizes two culverts and adds a bypass near Dennis Drive. Drivers detour via Ramona Court and Amherst Drive, and pedestrians cut north through Pinebrook Park to the Pinebrook Boulevard crosswalk.
Okay. The county side stays a proposal for now. County Executive Ken Jenkins proposed a 435.7 million dollar 2027 capital budget on October 15 with 5 million dollars for flood mitigation, and the Board of Legislators has to act before any of it is a check, so take it with a grain of salt until they vote. What is real today: the Council meeting tonight, the pavers at 7:00 AM, and the detour on Tulip Lane.
AI Corner: one plain-English AI thing, every issue
This week: have an AI read the paving list back to you, then check one street on the city's calendar.
Roadwork notices are a list of streets, dates and hours, which is the kind of text an AI summarizes well. Copy the two paving entries and the Tulip Lane closure notice into a free AI chat with this prompt: "I will paste city roadwork notices. List every street segment affected with its date and hours, and flag anything ambiguous."
Then do the part that earns the trust. Pick one street you drive and open the city's calendar entry for it. North Avenue between Mill Road and Quaker Ridge Road is today's example: the entry says 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. If the AI's line and the city's entry disagree on any street, the city wins. Close the tab with one street confirmed and the summary is worth using.
