The Lead

New Rochelle celebrates two 250th moments today: the Battle of Pell's Point at Orchard Beach, then Taste of Lincoln at Lincoln Park one morning and one afternoon, both free, both a short drive from downtown (2 min)

Two of the biggest events of the season share today, and the schedule splits them neatly. Start north: the Battle of Pell's Point reenactment runs 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, with viewing at Orchard Beach. The city calls it a full reenactment of the battle fought on October 18, 1776, which makes this morning the anniversary itself, 250 years to the day. It is the centerpiece of the city's Revolution on the Sound! 250th programming, and details live at newrochelleny.gov/250.

Then swing south to Lincoln Park, where Taste of Lincoln runs 1:00 to 6:00 PM. The newest stop in the city's Taste Of series brings signature dishes and soulful bites, live music, and vendors, with the city framing it as a chance to support the businesses that serve the neighborhood. Council Member David Peters called it a way to celebrate the neighborhood's culture, and City Manager Wilfredo Melendez tied it to the character, diversity and spirit of the area. Community chairs Pastor Leroy H. Jordan and LeChonne Williams helped pull the day together, and the New Rochelle agency Echelon Culture supported the creative direction.

The weather cooperates for both. Today runs sunny with a high near 57 and a light north wind around 6 mph, which is better running-around weather than yesterday's gusts. Tonight drops to a clear 43. If you take in both, lunch is the hinge: Orchard Beach wraps at noon, Lincoln Park starts serving at 1:00.

The questions New Rochelle searches this week, answer first, source after.

What is Taste of Lincoln?

It is the newest installment in the city's Taste Of series, running today, Sunday, October 18, from 1:00 to 6:00 PM at Lincoln Park. The city's announcement promises signature dishes and soulful bites, live music, and vendors, with the stated aim of supporting local businesses. It follows Taste events in other neighborhoods, and the city credits community chairs Pastor Leroy H. Jordan and LeChonne Williams with helping pull the day together. The announcement does not list an admission price, so bring some cash for the vendors and check the city's page for updates.

Is the Pell's Point reenactment workable with kids?

It runs outdoors, 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, with viewing at Orchard Beach, and a reenactment holds a kid's attention in a way a museum tour may not. The practical parts: Orchard Beach sits inside Pelham Bay Park, the big lot by the beach is the natural place to leave the car, and NYC Parks' fee schedule covers beach season only, so expect no charge in mid-October and call the park at (718) 885-2275 to confirm. Bring a blanket if you want to sit. The morning turns sunny and 57 with a light north wind, which is about as good as mid-October viewing weather gets.

What is the NRAA show reception at the library?

The New Rochelle Art Association's 110th Open Juried Show has been up in the Lumen Winter Gallery since September 28, and today is its formal reception: Sunday, October 18, 2:00 to 3:30 PM, an ArtsFest 2026 weekend event at the library, 1 Library Plaza. Juried means a judge picked which works hang and handed out placements across nine categories, from oil and acrylic to digital art. If you want to see the shows that later issues will reference, the gallery hours line up with the library's own hours, and the reception is the one afternoon the artists show up too.

City Hall

The Council meets Tuesday, the Planning Board follows Monday the 26th, and the State of the City closes the run October 27 three meetings in eight days, and Tulip Lane stays closed through all of them (2 min)

The City Council holds its Regular Legislative Meeting Tuesday, October 20, 6:15 to 7:15 PM at City Hall, 515 North Avenue. Agendas go up on the city's meeting page ahead of the session, and the Watch link on the calendar entry carries the video if you would rather see it than sit in it.

Two more meetings follow. The Planning Board meets Monday, October 26 at 7:00 PM, also at City Hall. Then the State of the City lands Tuesday, October 27, 6:00 to 8:30 PM at the JCC Mid-Westchester, 999 Wilmot Rd in Scarsdale, with an RSVP at newrochelleny.gov/SOTCRSVP. Last issue flagged the date after catching a mismatch; the city's own calendar entry says October 27, and that date holds this week.

One street note while you plan the week: Tulip Lane between Pinebrook Boulevard and Winding Brook Road stays closed for about six weeks from its October 14 start as the Sheldrake Culvert Replacement Project upsizes two culverts, part of the city's flood mitigation program. The detour is a week old today, and it will still be standing when the Council meets Tuesday.

AI Corner: one plain-English AI thing, every issue

This week: watch Tuesday's Council meeting with an AI notepad, before the State of the City on October 27.

The State of the City takes written questions from a room that did its homework. With the Council meeting Tuesday and the mayor's address nine days later, you have time to build one real question from what the city does. Open the Council video Tuesday night with a free AI chat beside it, and paste in this prompt: "I will paste notes from a city council meeting. List each agenda item in one plain sentence, and mark anything that touches property, zoning or fees."

Then check the machine. Pick the item that matters to you, replay that part of the video, and confirm the AI's line matches what was said. AI tools paraphrase, and on zoning items the gap between "discussed" and "approved" is the whole story. If the item survives the check, that is your State of the City question.

Reply with questions; they become future AI Corner topics.
