Summer work ended a month ago, and the city answered the obvious question. The Youth Bureau opened a Year-Round Youth Employment Program for ages 14 to 20, with 8-week sessions in the fall, winter and spring. Participants work up to 18 hours a week at 17 dollars an hour, and 30 youth are selected per session. Funding comes through the Westchester-Putnam Workforce Board.
There is one gate worth knowing before you talk to a teenager about this: applicants must meet the YEP income eligibility guidelines. If your household qualifies, the application deadline is Tuesday, October 14 at 4:00 PM, and emailed applications are not accepted. Everything runs through the city page at newrochelleny.gov/youthjobs.
If your kid misses this window, the city says the fall, winter and spring cycle repeats, and the summer program continues as its own separate track. The other deadline in your house this week is Friday at 4:30 PM for a participatory budget pitch, and one person can do both.

When is the participatory budgeting deadline in New Rochelle?
Tomorrow, Friday, October 9 at 4:30 PM. Ideas go in at newrochelleny.gov/pb for the city's first 200 thousand dollar round. The form asks three things, the problem, the place, and your fix, and it takes minutes. After tomorrow the steering committee reviews ideas for feasibility, cost and impact before residents vote.

Not Saturday. Today runs sunny with a high near 73 and west gusts to 23 mph, and Friday is sunny near 69 for the pitch deadline. Saturday is mostly sunny at 67, good news for Taste of Leroy, Touch A Truck and the Scarecrows pre-registration. Rain waits until Sunday: a 50 percent chance of showers after 2 PM, then showers Sunday night. No weather alerts were active for New Rochelle this morning.
Sunday brings the Paine to Paine Trail Half Marathon, a 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM window starting at New Rochelle High School, 265 Clove Rd, with registration at painetopain.com. If you drive Sunday morning, expect runners and course marshals on the trails-and-roads loop around the school; Saturday is the easier errand day, dry and mostly sunny at 67.
Leaf season rules from DPW, posted while the collection is already underway: leaves go out in biodegradable paper bags or open containers up to 75 lbs, never plastic bags or loose piles, which can bring fines. North end pickup days are Monday and Tuesday, south end Wednesday and Thursday, bags at the curb by 7:00 AM, with Friday as the holiday makeup day and no collection Thanksgiving week. Yard waste collection ends October 24, and since October 1 gas leaf blowers run weekdays 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and weekends 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM only. The full schedule and a mulch-mowing tutorial sit at newrochelleny.gov/leaf, or call 914-235-4029.
AI Corner: one plain-English AI thing, every issue
This week: have an AI turn a job posting into a teenager-ready summary.
The youth jobs program page is written for adults, with eligibility rules and session structure to read through. Try this with an AI assistant: "Here is a program description: [paste it]. Summarize it in four sentences a 15-year-old would read: what the job is, what it pays, what the schedule is, and what I need to qualify. Flag anything that could disqualify me."
The disqualification flag is the useful part, because the income guidelines decide everything and a teenager cannot check them alone. Read the result together, then apply at newrochelleny.gov/youthjobs before Tuesday at 4:00 PM.
