The Lead

Five days left to pitch an idea for the $200,000 participatory budget Ideas are due Friday at 4:30 PM, the money centers on city property around New Rochelle High School, and residents vote on the winners after the committee vets the submissions (3 min)

The money is real and the clock is short. New Rochelle set aside $200,000 in its 2026 capital budget for the city's first participatory budgeting round, which lets residents pitch ideas and later vote on which projects get funded. Year one centers on City-owned property around New Rochelle High School, including Huguenot Park and the Twin Lakes area, plus nearby streets, sidewalks and crosswalks in the city right of way. Ideas are due Friday, October 9 at 4:30 PM at newrochelleny.gov/pb, and the submission form is short: the problem, the place, your fix.

New Rochelle is the first municipality in Westchester County to adopt a participatory budgeting framework, and the third in New York State outside New York City and Saratoga Springs, according to the city. A ten-member steering committee, created by a unanimous City Council vote in January, develops and vets the proposals, and residents vote on how the money gets spent. If a crosswalk near the high school feels unsafe or a path through Huguenot Park feels neglected, that is exactly the kind of pitch this round exists for.

After Friday, the committee works through the submissions and the city finishes its rulebook, which will settle details like how voting runs and how many votes each resident gets. You do not need a drawing or an engineer to pitch; feasibility gets weighed after ideas are in. Five days is enough if you start with the block you walk.

AI Corner: one plain-English AI thing, every issue

This week: pressure-test your $200,000 pitch with an AI before Friday at 4:30 PM.

A pitch form is short, which makes it easy to submit a vague one. Try this with an AI assistant: "I want to propose a project for New Rochelle participatory budgeting. The location is [crosswalk, park corner or path]. The problem is [what goes wrong there now]. Help me write the problem statement in two sentences, list three ways to fix it, and pick the one a city can realistically build." The useful part is the last step, because the committee weighs feasibility after ideas come in, and a pitch that already thinks about cost and upkeep stands out.

Then take the strongest version to newrochelleny.gov/pb and submit it before Friday at 4:30 PM. If the form asks for your idea in your own words, read the AI draft out loud once and keep the parts you would say to a neighbor.

Reply with questions; they become future AI Corner topics.
