An NRHS teacher joins a MacArthur-funded national cohort Carmen Glenn is one of 18 teachers in this year's Climate and Equity class, a week in Maine is behind her, and City Hall holds committee day today at 3:45 (3 min)

New Rochelle High School teacher Carmen Glenn has been named a 2026 MacArthur Foundation Climate and Equity Teacher Fellow, one of 18 teachers chosen nationwide this year. The program is run by TERC, a STEM education institution in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with sponsorship from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and its announcement lists Glenn under New Rochelle High School, New York.

The heart of the fellowship is a weeklong institute at the Schoodic Institute in Acadia National Park in Maine, held July 26 to Aug. 1. Glenn's cohort of high school educators works on helping students understand climate science in its human context. Sessions covered place, whether urban, suburban or rural, Indigenous perspectives, youth voice and action, and the emotions that come with teaching the subject.

"Climate change and equity are inextricably linked through causes, effects and solutions," Glenn said. She pointed to the flooding that followed a glacier collapse in Nepal as an example of impacts reaching people who did little to cause the problem. Another lesson stayed with her from the week: "climate grief and anxiety are real and affect all of us."

The program does not end with the summer. In the coming year the fellows keep networking with colleagues across the country and with the TERC team, which puts New Rochelle classrooms inside a national exchange of teaching ideas.

The full 2026 class is listed on TERC's Climate and Equity page. If your student has Glenn this year, ask what the course is covering.

Why is New Roc City in the news?

The New York Post published a story on Sept 28 that calls the 1.2-million-square-foot complex at 33 LeCount Place a failed mall, nearly three decades after it opened in 1999. Talk of the Sound pushed back the same day: its editor writes that some of the reporting is unquestionably real but the framing, sourcing and missing context deserve a closer look, and he makes that case in his Words in Edgewise column.
