The Lead

School starts Tuesday with a half day. The Council hears Davenport Neck the same afternoon. the first bell and the first big hearing land on the same day; here is how both work (2 min)

Friends, the first day of school in New Rochelle is Tuesday, September 8, and it runs a half day at every school. The district's own 2026-2027 calendar lists September 8 as the first day for students and a Teachers' Professional Duties Day half day, after two staff-only opening days and the long weekend.

City Hall has its own big item the same day. The Council convenes at 3:45 PM at 515 North Avenue for the Committee of the Whole and public hearings, including the Davenport Neck zoning changes the council scheduled for this meeting back in July. If you want to speak, Community to Be Heard starts at 7:00 PM.

One useful step before you go: check the agenda on the city's CivicClerk portal so you know which item is which. Whatever the hearing produces, you will read it here Wednesday morning in plain English.

The questions New Rochelle searches this week, answer first, source after.

How do I get a New Rochelle library card this month?

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, and the library set a goal of 700 new cards. Bring identification and proof of New Rochelle residency to the Main Library or the Huguenot Children's Library and you can walk out with a card; people who work or attend school in the city are eligible too. You can also start the application online at bit.ly/NRPL_LibraryCard and pick the card up at the library. The library's table visits the New Rochelle Street Fair on Saturday, September 19, and Meet the Teacher Nights through the month.

When does Metro-North go back to the normal schedule?

Tuesday, September 8. The railroad ran a holiday schedule for Labor Day on Monday, and the regular weekday timetable returns with the school week. Check your train in the app the night before; the timetable at mta.info has the day's times.

School buses return Tuesday, and the alerts desk stays quiet no weather alerts for Westchester as of Monday morning (1 min)

The alerts desk shows all quiet: no active National Weather Service alerts for Westchester County and no new road or utility advisories for New Rochelle as of Monday morning.

The change to plan around this week is school itself. Buses, crossing guards and the half-day pickup all come back Tuesday, so give yourself the extra minutes on the first morning instead of testing them.
