The Lead

The youth jobs window closes today at 4:00 PM, and the city does not take late email 17 dollars an hour, ages 14 to 20, file at newrochelleny.gov/youthjobs (2 min)

The Year-Round Youth Employment Program stops taking applications today at 4:00 PM, and the Youth Bureau says emailed applications will not be accepted, so the website is the only door. The program pays 17 dollars an hour for up to 18 hours a week, runs 8-week sessions through the Fall, Winter and Spring, and takes ages 14 to 20. Applicants have to meet the Youth Employment Program income eligibility guidelines.

Why is the city strict about the deadline? Volume. Thirty applicants get a seat per session, and somebody has to sort the pile. If your kid is a few documents short at 3:50, submit what you have and call the Youth Bureau at 914-654-2045, because a finished application beats a perfect one that never got filed.

Missed it today? The Summer Youth Employment Program runs on its own cycle, and the city posts the next window on the same youthjobs page. Check it once a month rather than waiting for a notice.

Search answers

The questions New Rochelle searches this week, answer first, source after.

When is Tavern Night at Kenny's on the Water?

Tonight, 6:00 to 9:00 PM, at Kenny's on the Water, 2 Pelham Road. The city's 250th committee calls it Toast 250! Tavern Night, the tall ship Lynx gets its first welcome, and living history reenactors are part of the room. No ticket needed; show up. The ship itself is not open tonight, the free deck tours run Saturday.

Can you board the tall ship Lynx for free on Saturday?

Yes. Public tours run 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM Saturday, October 17 at the Municipal Marina, tickets are free, and parking at Hudson Park is free. The city distributes tour tickets at Hudson Park, so earlier is the safe side of the line. While you wait, the park turns into a small history festival: reenactors of General William Howe and Marbleheader John Glover, live music, colonial games from Philips Manor Hall Historic Site, and booths from local history groups.

Is it going to rain on the Lynx tours or the Battle of Pell's Point?

Saturday is the dry day: sunny, high near 51, breezy, which is coat weather on a dock. Sunday the 18th stays sunny, near 57, for the Battle of Pell's Point/Pelham reenactment, 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM with viewing at Orchard Beach. The wet stretch lands Thursday night into Friday: showers arrive after 2:00 AM Thursday night at an 80 percent chance, and Friday runs 90 percent with a high near 72. If ArtsFest is on your list, Saturday and Sunday are the days to book.

City Hall

The council skips a week: next stop is the Regular Legislative Meeting Tuesday, October 20 6:15 PM at City Hall, and agendas post online first (1 min)

No council meeting tonight. After Tuesday's committee of the whole and public hearings, the next one on the calendar is the Regular Legislative Meeting, Tuesday, October 20 at 6:15 PM at City Hall, 515 North Avenue. That is the meeting where items get voted. So if a hearing from last week touched your block, this is where the decision lands. Agendas post on the city site before the meeting, and Community to Be Heard gives residents the mic. The Historical and Landmark Review Board meets tonight at 6:00 PM at City Hall if certificates of appropriateness are your week.

AI Corner: one plain-English AI thing, every issue

This week: turn a packed 250th weekend into a two-day plan.

The city calendar is doing a lot this week: Tavern Night, the Lynx, ArtsFest, the haunt, a battle reenactment at Orchard Beach. Copy the event list from newrochelleny.gov/250, paste it into an AI chat, and try this: "Here are events in New Rochelle this weekend with times and locations: [paste]. I have Saturday 9 AM to 4 PM and Sunday 11 AM to 3 PM, starting from the West End. Group them into two days with travel time, flag anything that needs tickets, and leave one hour of slack for parking."

Then do the human check. Whatever plan it hands back, open the city page and confirm each time and address before you drive anywhere, because models quietly move events across days. The plan is a draft; the calendar is the fact.

Reply with questions; they become future AI Corner topics.
